It appears there could now be a genuine alternative to Google, introducing Cuil (pronounced Cool).
Links could be meaningless to Cuil, from my initial searches Cuil didn’t seem to care much for blogs and “social” style sites, the results produced more “corporate” search results than anything else, even when I included words like “blog” in my searches.
A visit to the Cuil webmaster area allows website owners to submit their site to be indexed, I have done this today and will be looking out for this blog appearing in their results.
It’s early days, but keep an eye on this…it could be big.

There has to be something in it, otherwise there wouldnt be so much noise in just one day
I tested it out and I’m not to happy with the results… I wish it luck but it’s going to take a lot to take down Google.
hmm, very interesting. Can they beat google? i guess not! Well, lets try cuil and see!
I think it would take years to over throw Google and from what I have seen of cuil it’s just doesn’t have the right stuff.
I have a blog about Google, I was one of the firsts to see Cuil. I’ve made a test search and the results were terrible. I don’t think Cuil will be “a stone” for Google.
I think google is the well-known web cite. It doesn’t seem possible that Cuil will replace Google.
I’ve tested and I don’t like it! Searching keywords in Portuguese the results are ridiculous. Major websites from Portugal are not included! If you do the slogan “biggest search engine” we should expect more, no?
I’ll keep my eye on it, but I’m reluctant to think it can overtake Google. Of course, I could be wrong and it might succeed where others have failed!
I’ve been reading a lot about Cuil and finally tried it just now. I like how the search results were presented but not the results themselves. You’re definitely right about the seeming favoritism on corp sites. I typed in a search phrase and all I got was a list of products even if I was looking for REVIEWS.
If cuil only wants to list corporate sites, I won’t be using them. I find most corporate sites boring.
Besides if they aren’t going to give Internet marketers a fair opportunity to rank in their search engines, why should we bother with them.
Wow, this could be good or bad. Im kind of excited to see what they have to offer. Google is dominating but I would like to see what Cuil brings to the table.

I ditto Linda Morton and add that if Cuil caters to corporate sites and not blogs…seems like we all will be sticking with Google, which to me means…Google wont be going anywhere soon. Also seems to me that if Corporate sites still care about advertising on the web..they too will still be interested in Google’s format since blog traffic is one of the biggest advertising formats on the web. I dont know, just seems this way to me.
cool sucks. i like the idea of a google competitor but it is pretty lame
Even though I would love for a true contender to take the down the Google Goliath…
I too cannot seem to get much help out of ‘Cuil’ but I thought it was my IQ!?!
Maybe, I’m not as bad off as I thought..?

meh… I tried it and overall it’s results are very limited… I like the set up but they need alot of work on their algorithm before they will go anywhere… Google FTW
I haven’t tried it based on what my friends/family have told me. Someone thinks Cuil is responsible for a virus they got on their computer!! Crazy. Not to mention I don’t like that their spelling of C-U-I-L is supposed to spell “cool.” Good luck with it though.
I love google!
Very interesting post, I’ll definitely keep and eye on this company. It’s going to take at least a massive viral marketing campaign along with an incredible algorithm to compete with the Google giant.
I can’t really see Cuil even coming close to competing with Google. Not to mention, I would think there could be some patent or tech secrets these ex-Googlers are treading on.
Thanks for the heads-up! I find it strange that they claim to have more pages indexed but more than half of my websites, in different niches, aren’t indexed.
Cuil got some publicity but I went into oblivion when people couldn’t find what they were searching for. I wonder where those 30 million of investment were actually invested in.
It will take something special to throw the big G from the throne. Currently, I dont see that happening.
wow this seems to be very interesting can they beat Google or not?
Google still cuts it for me. I am yet to find any search engine that generates the quality of results as Google does. Google has been around for ages and looks like it will be for ages to come.
I’ve checked it out and so far I’m not impressed but I am hoping that we get an alternative to the mighty G. Although something is up with Yahoo lately as I have seen more and more traffic coming from Yahoo over the past few weeks to my blogger blogs. I never use to receive any traffic from Yahoo and some of my blogs are actually on the first page of Yahoo now. Yippeee
Cuil is very new and it still has some work to do but it could eventually become competitive with Google.
Cuil will not replace Google. They just don’t have the money to overcome it. Besides that, Google is already a monopoly. Maybe yahoo will invest in Cuil ?
I don’t think cuil can beat google.. No one can…
Google is still the best right now. Cuil will have to do a lot more before it can be an alternative to Google.
Cuil will need ages for reaching half the position where Google is today..
With Google owning 70+% of the market share it will be hard to take them down. Ask tried and failed miserably.
Cuil cannot be a replace for Google. I have tried it out but is suerly 10 times better than Cuil.
I’ve heard of another one trying to replace google called blingo. Google is just way to big and peolpe don’t care to change. Plus, I just don’t think Cuil is “cool” enough.
haha …lame, I know. -M
Cuil will not replace Google, however can become an alternative search platform for iPhone of iBook users, for example. It just has to find its niche.
I think it will be a challenge for google to beat. And to prove itself best would be another one.
It will be a monumental task to take down google. One I wish would happen actually. I personally think their index is turning to crap. Half the results that pull up on the first page are craigslist, yellowpages, kajijiji, etc I want relevant content, or business pages, not stupid classified ads
It’s interesting !! Corporate sites are still be interested in Google’s format since blog traffic is one of the biggest advertising formats on the web…
this is interesting…but don’t think it will ever top google.
